Combined counties enjoy mid-summer success to aid Wildlife

Balfours has sponsored a highly successful collaboration between Shropshire and Cheshire branches of the Game and Wildlife Conservation Trust.

The land agency was one of the key sponsors of the mid-summer lunch in the spectacular grounds of Cholmondeley Castle, enjoyed by nearly 200 guests. The event held a promise auction, with live and silent lots raising more than £30,000 for the GWCT. Final event figures tbc.

Chairman of the Board of Trustees for the GWCT, Sir Jim Paice DL, addressed the audience describing the invaluable scientific research work undertaken by the GWCT across the whole of Britain, the results of which shape land and water management to enhance flora and fauna. “It has been proven that where there is active management of game for sporting shoots, other birds and wildlife benefit too,” he enthused.

Guest speaker, Sir Johnny Scott, Bt MFH, is best known for his BBC2 series, “Clarissa and the Countryman,” which he wrote and co-presented with Clarissa Dickson Wright. He entertained the audience with tales and brushes, from “Up dale to down river,” reminding the audience that Country life in the United Kingdom is in danger of being lost as too many people lose their rural roots.

He urged guests that the country way of life is worth fighting for, so that the next generation can enjoy the same unique relationship with the countryside and all that thrives within it.
